It was just another party for Rainbow Blitz and his friends. About an hour ago, everypony had arrived at Bubble Berry’s apartment bearing food to share and a million stories to tell as always. Everypony was exactly where they were supposed to be. He and Applejack played darts in the corner and took swigs of Berry’s secret concoction of Solaris-knows-what. Butterscotch and Dusk Shine sat around a table eating cake and chatting gently about Dusk’s latest studies and ‘Scotch’s animals. Berry cruised around the room, totally in his element as he floated effortlessly between each of his friends, currently stationed at Elusive’s side with shining, intrigued blue eyes and a genuine, caring smile.
But, let it never be said that Rainbow Blitz was an unobservant pony. Oh no, despite what his friends thought, he could easily pick out some changes from the normal Bubble Berry party atmosphere. For example, even from here Blitz could see the vaguest trace of worry and contemplation on Berry’s young features. Yes, something was definitely wrong with his usually carefree and bouncy friend. What could it be? Maybe the Cakes had finally become the wiser and were considering firing/evicting him. Or both. No, of course not, they love Berry, despite all his…Berry-ness. Maybe he…
“Blitz? Ya still playin’? Or will ya forfeit ta me?” Applejack crossed his front legs and shot him a challenging, smug smile.
“In your dreams, Jack,” Blitz’s laugh was cocky as he recoiled back and then shot forward, sending the dart speeding through the air towards the board and landing it just near the center.
“Not bad,” his friend admitted, eyeing the dart with his usual calmness. “But Ah bet ya can’t…”
And Blitz tuned him out, looking back to Berry and Elusive. Berry was speaking now, but what he was saying, Blitz couldn’t tell. Elusive was listening intently, which was yet another oddity, because usually Elusive held the party pony at length and regarded him with all the poise and smoothness of a politician speaking disinterestedly to an average pony. Friendly, but at arm’s length.
“What’re ya lookin’ at anyway?” Applejack was beside him now, the dart game abandoned as he squinted his emerald eyes over at the pair by the snack table. “Berry and Elusive? But they’re just talkin’!”
Blitz rolled his eyes. Applejack could never be as observant as he. Another thing he prided himself in being better at than his farm pony friend. “Don’t you see? Berry’s worried and he’s telling Elusive something important. And Elusive’s actually listening to him for once.”
After inspecting the conversation for a moment, Applejack shook his head and laughed, “Naw. They’re just talkin’, like Ah said! What d’ya thinks gonna happen anyways?”
Blitz’s irritation grew with every word. Who cared what was going to happen? The point was something was off and he wanted to figure out what!
“Well, gee, I dunno Jack. Why don’t we wait and see to find out?” His voice was slow and condescending, absolutely drenched in sarcasm.
“Ya don’t have ta talk down ta me like that, Blitz,” he sneered back, pressing his muzzle against Blitz’s threateningly.
“Oh yeah? Are you gonna stop me?” Blitz turned himself around to face his friend, flaring out his wings predatorily.
“Yer askin’ fo—“
Dusk’s surprised, loud gasp echoed through Berry’s apartment and Butterscotch eeped and shot under the table, pulling the table cloth and the dishes on it with him by mistake. Elusive and Berry jumped apart, blushing and giggling like little schoolfillies.
“Wait! What happened?” Blitz called, forgetting his fight with Applejack in an instance. “What’d I miss?”
“Well, I looked over to see if there was any cake left,” Dusk began. “And these two were kissing over our food!” He pointed a blameful hoof at the stallions in question.
Berry just chuckled and waved, “Uh, hey guys.”
“I really don’t see how this affects you all this much. Things like these happen at parties all the time,” Elusive defended, jutting his nose in the air and pulling Berry close to him protectively.
“Well, I don’t really care,” Blitz admitted. “Berry can stick his tongue down whoever’s throat he wants to.”
The table made an uncomfortable sound. Blitz rolled his eyes in its direction before continuing, “I’m just upset that I missed it! Thanks a lot, AJ!”
“What? That ain’t mah fault!”
“Yes it is! I knew something was up and instead of helping me find out what it is, you just picked a fight! As usual!”
And, as the argument unfolded and Dusk hurried over to mediate and ‘Scotch kept himself under the table, Berry turned to his new coltfriend again.
“We oughta match-make Blitz and Applejack, don’t you think? They’re totally in love!”
“Indeed,” Elusive agreed with a diplomatic nod. But after checking to make sure nopony was listening, he ducked down close to Berry’s ear and whispered, “But we can do that later. Let’s go find a closet and make out.”
“Okie dokie lokie!”
And they stole off to the bakery’s storage room downstairs.

Note from Donny: You will never convince me that this was not my doing. I AM AS A GOD. Bwa ha ha ha ha!
BSB Comments: *Hard eyeroll at Donny* I really liked this. Blitz being the pony who notices things and Applejack being oblivious was fun. The whole back and forth between Blitz and AJ was enjoyable, and I liked that Blitz was right in the end. I also liked Blitz’s indignation that he missed the action, and the complete lack of surprise from anypony at Berry and Elusive’s making out. This was fun! Great work!
