Thirty Minute Pony Stories

Where we challenge ourselves to write pony stories in thirty minutes. Prompts are posted daily. All safe for work.

In the dead of night, a small light outside of Ponyville flickered. The flickering was coming from a large hangar bay. Inside, a pink pony was holding a blowtorch to a large contraption. She turned off the flame and lifted her welding mask. A satisfied smile formed on her face. She picked up a small instrument beside her and blew into it. The contraption in front of her responded by moving slightly forward. The smile on her face grew. Perfect. Spike’s going to love this. All I have to do is make it a surprise.

Spike cracked his eyes open. For some reason, he was moving. He was on the back of somepony. This pony smelled sweet, almost as if they spent their time rolling in candy. He also noticed that he was no longer in his basket. He stretched himself and yawned. After smacking his lips, he came to a startling realization.

“I’m being kidnapped!” he yelled. “Help! Help!” A pink hoof put itself in his mouth. He looked up and found his pink friend shushing him. On her head was a red stripped bandanna.

“Shhhhh,” she said. “you don’t want to wake everypony up now do you?” She removed her hoof from his mouth and kept walking.

“Pinkie?” Spike asked. “Where am I? And why are you kidnapping me?”

“I’m not kidnapping you,” she laughed. “I just broke into your house and abducted you without your knowledge or consent. And I’m taking you somewhere fun.”

“That sounds exactly like kidnapping,” Spike deadpanned. Pinkie’s face acquired a thoughtful expression.

“Huh. So it does. I guess I am kidnapping you.”

“Is Twilight going to have to pay a ransom or something?”

“No no, nothing like that is going to happen. Tell me, Spike, what’s special about today?” Spike tapped his chin.

“Saturday?”

“That’s only half right. Come on, you should know this.” Spike’s eyes widened.

“My birthday!” Pinkie smiled as they reached their destination. Spike got off Pinkie and took in their surroundings. They were in the center of town and stood beside a fountain. With them were four other ponies: Rainbow Dash, Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Belle. Rainbow Dash had a tired expression on her face.

“Hey Pinkie,” she yawned. “hey Spike. Pinkie, I don’t mean to question you logic, but don’t you think it would have been better to give Spike his present in the morning?”

“Technically,” Apple Bloom said, “it is morning. And Happy Birthday Spike.”

“Ordinarily, yes,” Pinkie answered. “But this is special.” Pinkie reached behind the assembled ponies, and pulled out a long wooden box. She gave it to Spike.

“Happy Birthday, open it up. I know you’ll like this.” Spike opened the box. One of his eyebrows rose.

“What did you get?” Scootaloo asked. “Is it a crystal sword?”

“Is it a gem the size of your head?” Sweetie Belle asked. Spike lifted a brass horn from the box. All of the assembled ponies, except Pinkie, had a confused look on their faces.

“A bugle?” Rainbow asked. “You got us all up before the crack of dawn, to give Spike a bugle?” Pinkie giggled.

“The bugle is only half of the present,” she said. “Go on, blow into it. Once you do, the other half of the present will get here.” Spike shrugged. He took in a deep breath and blew into the bugle. A short melody came from the horn’s end. A faint tremor could be felt on the ground.

“Anypony else feel that rumbling?” Apple Bloom asked. Pinkie ignored her.

“Again,” she commanded. Spike again blew into the bugle. Another melody came from the horn. The rumbling got stronger. As the sun was rising over the horizon, a small shadow could be seen in the sun. It was approaching them.

“What is that thing?” Sweetie Belle asked. “Anypony else see it?” The other Crusaders and Rainbow Dash looked at the sun. The shadow was getting bigger.

“One more time,” Pinkie said. Spike took in a large breath, and blew in to the horn a final time. A sharp note came from the end.

“Pinkie, didn’t you say that we had to be quiet?” Spike asked. “The bugle must have woken everypony up by now. They’ll probably…. is that music in the distance?” He looked to Pinkie, who had a smile on her face. He turned his attention to the other ponies, all of them were gawking. Spike looked to where they were looking and his eyes widened. Approaching them was a flying galleon. Its body looked as if it was made out of pure mahogany and its sails were a creamy white. On the center sail was the image of a stylized dragon skull with a grin on its face. Underneath it were two cutlasses crossing each other, forming an X. The music was coming from it.

“Pirates!” Sweetie Belle screamed. “Pirates are invading Ponyville!” Rainbow Dash prepared to fly up.

“I’ll teach those pirates not to mess with us,” she leapt into the air ready to fly. Pinkie grabbed her tail and pulled her down. “Ow. Pinkie! What are you doing? Pirates are here! We need to stop them.”

“No we don’t,” she said. She turned to Spike. “Spike, that’s the other half of your birthday present. That, is the Free Joker, an air ship that took me nearly a year to make. Its fully furnished, and it has an engine that stores energy from the sun. It’s yours now.” Spike just stared at the pony. A tricorn hat was placed on his head. Five ropes dropped from the ship as it drew closer to them.

“So, Captain,” Pinkie smiled. “Would you like to see the world?” Spike grinned.

“Aye,” he said. “I would Master Pinkie.” He turned his attention to the four other ponies.

“Would you all like to join me?” The Crusaders immediately nodded their heads.

“Cutie Mark Crusaders Sky Pirates!” they screamed. The Free Joker was slowly passing by them. Each of the Crusaders grabbed onto a rope and was immediately pulled up.

“Dashie?” Pinkie asked. A cocky smile formed on Rainbow’s face.

“No way am I missing the adventure of a lifetime.” She flew up onto the ship’s deck. Pinkie grabbed onto a rope and was pulled up. Spike was preparing to do the same when a voice stopped him.

“Spike!” He looked behind him and found his guardian running to him. “Thank goodness you’re safe! I thought the pirates had kidnapped you. Come on, it’s not safe here.” The rope passed by him. He chased after it.

“Spike?” Twilight asked. “Where are you going?” Spike grabbed onto the rope and turned to Twilight. He flashed her a grin.

“That’s Captain Spike to you,” he called. “And if you want me, you’ll have to catch me.” He was reaching the deck when he heard Twilight’s fading voice.

“Spike! Come back here young dragon! Don’t…” The voice disappeared as he landed on the Free Joker’s deck. All of the assembled ponies were equipping themselves with pirate gear. Sweetie Belle handed Spike a belt with a scabbard on its left side.

“We are going to come back to Ponyville right?” he asked as he put the belt on.

“Of course,” Pinkie said putting a knife at her side. “I couldn’t possibly leave Ponyville forever! We’ll go back after two weeks.” She tossed a sword to Spike.

“So who’s what?” Rainbow asked. Spike slid the sword into his scabbard.

“First mate slash lookout,” he said pointing at Rainbow. Rainbow saluted and flew to the crow’s nest. He pointed to Pinkie. “Mechanic, since you built this thing.”

“What about us?” Scootaloo asked. Spike walked to the wheel of the ship.

“You’re apprentices,” Pinkie said. The Crusaders looked to each other and nodded. “Captain, where to first?” Spike grabbed onto the wheel.

“Past Vanhoover. Past Smokey Mountain. To unexplored lands. To the new world.”  He spun the wheel to the right, and headed towards adventure.

Dear Author,

Hee hee, Pinkie can’t actually build something like that. I enjoyed how unrealistic this was, and seeing Spike enjoy himself so much was really fun.

Actually, given Pinkie’s gyrobike and party cannon„ maybe an airship like that wouldn’t be too farfetched… . Nah, I’m being silly. But maybe it would be worth keeping an eye on her, just in case.

Oh! Sorry, I got distracted there. Thank you for your story, Spike will like this one, I just know it!

Sincerely,

Twilight Sparkle
