Princess Celestia was, for the first time in a long while, worried. It had been an hour since the ambassador was supposed to arrive. Relations with this nation were tense due to a recent ‘attack’ initiated by an Equestrian citizen. Dozens of reasons as to why he wasn’t there entered her mind, all of them were bad. Beside her, a white unicorn wearing a light grey blazer and a short blouse was idly tapping the table they sat at. She looked around the room.

“Princess,” she said. “Where is this ambassador? Wasn’t he supposed to arrive an hour ago?”

“He was, Rarity,” Celestia answered. “It’s strange though, whenever I visit them, they are always punctual. Punctuality is one of the things they value the most.”

“Clearly this ambassador doesn’t,” Rarity adjusted the glasses on her stout. “Why exactly am I here? Wouldn’t it be best to have one of your political advisers with you?”

“The ambassador specifically wanted to speak with you,” Rarity’s jaw dropped. “This directly affects you. As a matter of fact, I believe you’ve been accused of a crime in their nation.”

“A crime?” she gasped. “I have done nothing to earn a persecution! In all my life, I have never…” A glow on a unicorn guard’s cufflink stopped her speech. He lifted it up and placed it to his ear. After whispering into it, he turned his attention to the princess.

“Your highness,” he said. “I’m sorry, but I’ve been called to the entrance hall. The guards and some creature have gotten into a physical dispute.” Celestia’s raised her head.

“What kind of creature exactly?” she asked.

“The sergeant described it as a bipedal creature with light gray fur all over it. From their reports, it has a short tail and shares the same characteristics as a dog.” Celestia’s eyes widened. Rarity tapped her chin.

“That sounds almost exactly like a…” she was stopped as she, Celestia, and the guard were covered in a golden glow. A bright flash temporarily blinded her. When the world returned to normal, she was in the entrance hall. In front of her were at least a dozen guards attacking a bipedal canine. In the canine’s hands was a large staff with a red circular gem at the end of it. It was wearing a white dress shirt with a red sleeveless overcoat over it. The overcoat had yellow arcane characters etched into its trim. On the canine’s neck was a black collar with topazes embedded into it. At the center of the collar was a triangle shaped ruby. Its eyes shared the same colour as the topazes. As guards rushed towards the canine, the staff was swung at them. Celestia’s eyes stared at the sight in horror.

“A diamond dog!” Rarity said. “What is that filthy creature doing here?” The diamond dog looked up at Rarity.

“You know,” he said with a smooth voice. “I’m right here, I’d prefer if you didn’t throw insults directly at my face.” The staff was swung behind him as a guard attempted to grab him.

“Such a vile creature. Princess, I suggest that you…”

“STAND DOWN!” The Royal Canterlot voice echoed in the entrance hall. All of the guards backed away from the diamond dog. The diamond dog tapped his staff on the ground and it shrunk. A circular amulet with a sharp cone at the bottom was left when the shrinking finished. It was placed over his neck as Celestia approached. “Hello Prince Yuris, it’s been a while.” Celestia bowed to Yuris. He made a fist and placed it into his palm with his fingers pointing up, returning the bow.

“Indeed it has Celestia,” he said. “But it’s Ambassador Yuris now.”

“Care to explain to me why you’re late?” she asked. “And more importantly, why were you attacking my guards?” A chuckle escaped Yuris’ mouth.

“Why don’t you ask them?” Celestia looked at her guards. All of them shied away from her gaze.

“Well?” All of the guards nervously rubbed their hooves on the ground.

“Your highness,” a guard spoke up. “We apprehended the crea-, I mean, Ambassador Yuris when he entered the hall.”

“And why would that be?” The same guard looked to the floor and mumbled. “What was that?”

“We thought he was hostile. He kept claiming that he was a visiting ambassador. We…didn’t believe him.” A hoof slapped itself against Celestia’s forehead. Yuris laughed.

“I did tell you all that an ambassador was coming to the castle correct?” All of the guards nodded. “Then why did you attack him?” The guards shuffled their hooves.

“We assumed the ambassador would be a pony.” Again, a hoof slapped itself against Celestia’s forehead. Yuris’ laughter grew.

“Jeez Celestia,” he laughed. “My mother told me that ponies weren’t that accepting to other sapient creatures, but I never knew that you’d take it to such an extreme!” A sigh left her mouth. Walked away from the guards and signaled Yuris to follow.

“Yes, I’ll freely admit that my people are… rather slow to accept those outside our race,” she sighed. She stopped in front of Rarity. “Rarity, this is Yuris, prince of Canis, and son of Empress Canto. He’s acting as her ambassador.” Yuris made the same gesture with his hands and bowed. Rarity returned it.

“How do you do?” she asked politely. Snickering could be heard from the ambassador. “Is something funny?” He stood from his bow.

“Oh nothing really,” he said. “I just find it odd that you can go from calling me a ‘filthy creature’ and ‘vile’ to being polite at the drop of a hat. You’d fit right in with those two faced ponies in the Canterlot elite.” An embarrassed blush appeared on Rarity’s face.

“Well… based on my experience with your race, I assumed…”

“That we’d all be the same,” he finished. “Yes, yes, I’ve used that reasoning when I was younger as well. Anyways, shall we get onto business?” Celestia nodded. Her horn lit up and all three of them returned to the meeting room where Rarity and Celestia started in.

“Rarity,” Celestia began. “A while back, you took a large deposit of gems from some diamond dogs correct?” Rarity nodded.

“Those gems were on Canissian land,” Yuris said. “You’ve stolen from my country.” Rarity’s face became whiter than it once was.

“But I took those gems from just outside of Ponyville,” she explained. “I’ve never even been to Canis before!”

“Technically,” Celestia said. “You have. Equestria is built directly on top of a nation that’s ten miles underground. From what I’ve been told, you and your friends were dragged down to Canis. And those gems that you took, are from Canissian soil.” Rarity adjusted the collar on her blazer.

“I can explain!”

Yuris leaned back in his chair. “So start explaining.”

Norse Pony’s comments: I like the idea that the diamond dog nation is just under Equestria, and the ambassador is a pretty engaging character. Rarity was amusingly awkward, and the story begs the question of how Rarity is going to atone for her Grand Theft Gem. It appears Celestia needs to train her guards better, though. : D
