“Ugh, I hate uniforms!” Dash grumbled as she adjusted her tie with a hoof. “This. This is why I joined the weather patrol. They don’t care about all that stuff.”

Applejack chuckled and stepped in, pushing Dash’s hoof away as she fixed her tie. “Sorry, Sugarcube. But you wanna be a Wonderbolt, ya gotta deal with both uniforms.”

Rainbow watched as Applejack tugged gently on the tie with her teeth and used her hooves to smooth out Dash’s dress shirt. She had an almost surprised look on her face when Applejack pulled away. Then a smirk showed on her face, the same one she always flashed you when she was just about to make some comment she thought was a lot more clever than it really was.

“Jeez, I thought I was dating Applejack, not Rarity.”

Applejack rolled her eyes and knocked her flank against Rainbow’s side, rolling her over onto the floor with a surprised yelp. Applejack stood over her and grinned down at her, leaning in to press a kiss to her lips.

“Still thinkin’ I’m Rarity?”

Rainbow grinned back. “Could be. Your flank’s getting big enough.”

“Oh yeah?” Applejack asked, pressing her full weight down on Rainbow’s smaller frame. “Big enough it can knock yers around any day, I reckon.”

With a squirm and a shudder Rainbow grunted under Applejack. “Hey! Come on, don’t mess up my uniform.”

Applejack snorted and got up, chuckling. “Now who’s bein’ Rarity?”

“Heh, sorry.” Rainbow stood up and ran a hoof through her mane. “I’ve been hearing about this stupid thing for months. Every day they’re telling me about how Equestria’s finest should look their finest. Canterlot doesn’t get griffon ambassadors every day. I guess it sunk in a little.”

This time when Applejack tended to Rainbow’s uniform, Rainbow smiled at her in appreciation, and Applejack nodded at her words, smiling back. “Yeah, I getcha.”

“I just never felt like I fit much in one of these,” Rainbow said, messing with her tie again. Applejack smacked her hoof away again and fixed it again.

“I can’t say I disagree. I ain’t ever see much point to you bein’ in clothes,” Applejack replied. Rainbow snorted out a laugh and slapped Applejack’s face with her tail.

When she was finished with Rainbow’s uniform Applejack came around to face her and looked her in the eyes. “But you worked awful hard to get that uniform, and I’m mighty proud o’ that.”

Rainbow smiled and rubbed her nose against Applejack’s, a tender gesture made all the more precious by its rarity. “Thanks. That’s all I want. To make you proud.”

Applejack rubbed back and smiled. “Ya always do. And when you get back I’ll be just as proud to take that dang uniform right off ya.”

Rainbow spread her wings and grinned, nodding eagerly.

Bookman’s Comments

Another wonderful piece, Robin. No matter what ship you write, you always get to the heart and beauty of each one. I love RD and AJ’s dynamic here. Tender yet passionate. The ending is just perfection. I particularly like Rainbow smiled and rubbed her nose against Applejack’s, a tender gesture made all the more precious by its rarity. “Thanks. That’s all I want. To make you proud.”

Applejack rubbed back and smiled. “Ya always do. And when you get back I’ll be just as proud to take that dang uniform right off ya.”

It’s just so very them.
