“Mist,” Rainbow Dash complained, “why is there always mist when we go to weird places? If I were the pegasus in charge of this area, this mist would be gone instantly!”

“If you were in charge of this place, dear, then nothing would change.” Rarity commented.

The others laughed as Rainbow Dash rolled her eyes. Their laughter was cut short by the sudden surge of white mist blowing into their eyes. The mist brushed at the group of six like a drizzle of rain instead of the gentile touch. The air grew thicker as the mist mixed with rain.

Faint shadows danced underneath the curtain of rain. Fluttershy yelped and sprung off the ground with her wings, joining Rainbow Dash in the air.

“Did you see that?” Fluttershy cried, “something just-“

”I saw it too.” Twilight Sparkle quickly said.

The group stopped their trek through the downward sloping plains. Twilight closed her eyes and prepared a spell in her mind. Applejack and Pinkie Pie kept her bodies towards the ground, ready to leap and strike at anything that appeared through the mists. Although they were sent to explore what hid behind the Northern Peaks as peaceful messengers, they were told to not take lightly to bandits.

Twilight Sparkle looked up to Rainbow Dash. Twilight nodded. Rainbow Dash spun circles around the group. The mist and rain disappeared, revealing the brown grass drowning underneath a thin layer of water. Rainbow Dash threw her body to the right, causing a blast of air to push the mists and rain away.

Amidst the curling mists, the faint image of a griffin and a large four-legged creature stared back at them. The two charged at the ponies.

Before Twilight could cast a shield spell, the griffin flew through the mists and quickly turned towards the charging beast. The griffin was slightly taller than Rainbow Dash, but had a slender frame, much like a pony. The griffin’s wings were larger in relation to its body, an unusual trait.

The griffin fished a small paper from a pouch and crushed it in its talons. The griffin took a deep breath, then shouted at the gargantuan figure ready to push the group aside. The mists flew aside at the sound of an improbably loud roar.

A creature of silver fur and of bear-like stature stopped its charge. The prey could see the predator. The creature looked helplessly at the ponies and griffin, then leapt back into the mist in fear.

The mists and rain returned. The griffin let out a sigh of relief and tossed the paper aside.

“Casting paper.” Twilight noted. “That’s something griffins can’t use.”

The griffin looked at Twilight Sparkle. He lowered his gaze at the pony, then raised his eyebrow. He gestured to his large wings and thin hind legs. He also pointed to his shorter beak and absence of a wattle around his eye.

“Oh!” Twilight interrupted she shook her head an giggled. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were a hippogriff.”

The hippogriff smiled.

“Why are you venturing through the mists? My mistycoat nearly mistook you for a meal.” He looked at the discarded paper. It was is if the sheet had been set on fire.

“I had to use my last Mist Dispersal paper, too.” he said under his breath.

“We’re trying to map the area beyond the Northern Peaks,” Twilight said, “can you help us?”

The hippogriff raised an eyebrow. “You’re going to be going through Mist Dispersal spells quickly. I can show you what we’ve mapped in Lumen, but even we haven’t completed mapping this place.”

“Can you take us there?” Twilight asked.

The hippogriff nodded and opened his pouch of casting paper. After rummaging through his pouch, he frowned as he fished out two papers with spiraling runes.

“I don’t have enough teleporting spells.” the hippogriff said, “you have to follow me through the mists, then.”

Twilight nodded. The other ponies nodded as well.

The hippogriff turned away and walked away from the group.

“Lumen’s this way. Remember if you see anything through the mists; since I’m out of spells, you’re going to have to stop the mistycoats.”

Krizak Comments:

Interesting, to run into a native while exploring that doesn’t even know the land himself. I’m intrigued by the mistycoats and in the hippogriff’s magical capabilities. The short fight sequence was nice as well.
