Everything was going perfectly!

Sweetie Belle smiled to herself from her perch high in the rafters of the Apple’s barn, ignoring the steady dripping of rainwater seeping through parts of the roof. Down below her two best friends were sharing a blanket to keep warm as they devoured a pie together. She was doing her best to resist the urge to let loose a squeal, wanting to avoid the exact reason her sister Rarity could never play matchmaker.

The night had gone perfectly, as the girls had planned to go out to dinner together and take in a Wonderbolts show before returning to Apple Bloom’s for some pie and a sleepover. The only hitch in their so-called perfect plan was when Sweetie had to suddenly bow out. The pegasus and the earth pony had both agreed to go on anyway, as the tickets were non-refundable, and they did have reservations.

What they didn’t know, was that Sweetie Belle had backtracked after she left to follow them, her eyes wide and filled with mischief as she sneaked around as quietly as she could. Sure there was that close-call when Scootaloo headed to the bathroom as she was opening the door, and sure the Fan Screen had focused on her during the show, but neither Apple Bloom or Scootaloo had given any indication that they noticed her.

But those close calls didn’t matter, all that was in her mind was how close the two seemed to be getting, staring and whispering to each other during dinner, hugging and jumping together while the Wonderbolts did their impressive feats, and now they shared a cozy blanket, secluded in a barn with only an apple pie between them.

Then one of them moved, and Sweetie Belle couldn’t quite contain her curiosity as she leaned down to hopefully hear them this time. Both of them were facing each other now, warm smiles on their faces, drifting closer and closer.

She stared intently, leaning closer and closer, not wanting to miss the moment when her plans came to fruition! The white unicorn could almost taste the sweet flavor of victory, she could feel her mouth spread in a wide, excited smile.

Scootaloo and Apple Bloom were nearly touching when, as both smiles turned into smirks, they turned as one and stared up at Sweetie Belle.

“Hey Sweetie Belle, enjoying the view?” The orange pegasus said with an impossibly wide smile.

“Ah told she’d been followin’ us from the start.” Said the farm pony, her eyes alight with amusement and a smug sense of satisfaction.

The unicorn fell from her perch and landed just in front of them, lips trembling and a bright blush on her cheeks. She shook for a moment before rearing back on her hind legs, front hooves spread wide as she screeched.

“OH COME ON!”

Sweetie Belle stalked off in a huff, glaring down at the pie before her horn sparked to life, lifting the pie and securing her rain cloak around her neck again.

And as the little white unicorn trotted off in the rain, muttering about smartypants earth ponies and mocking pegasi around vicious bites of pie, the former leaned over and planted a very soft kiss on the cheek of the latter, whose cheek turned a very bright shade of red.

Piggy Comments:

Heh, this is pretty hilarious. I really like the elaborate set up by Scootaloo and Apple Bloom, and the way that Sweetie Belle is happy to just assume that they didn’t know she was there despite the many chances they had to spot her. And then the ending is just wonderful. Well played. ^^
