Thirty Minute Pony Stories

Where we challenge ourselves to write pony stories in thirty minutes. Prompts are posted daily. All safe for work.

An old castle had been recently discovered in the San Palomino Desert. Dozens of Equestrian archaeologists had journeyed to the desert to see what other wonders could be unearthed. They had found buildings with architecture vastly different from what they knew, old temples, crumbling statues, and engravings from a civilization long gone. Amongst the archaeologists studying the ruins was a purple unicorn mare. She was standing in a tent with an old stone writings in front of her and dozens of text books floating around her.

“This isn’t draconic,” she said. “It’s far too symbolic to be it. It shares many similarities to the diamond dog language, but none of the words translate properly. I wonder…”

“Professor Twilight,” the unicorn looked up. Entering the tent was a deep green pegasus with a brown mane and tail. “I’ve found something interesting.”

“What did you find?” the pegasus brought a stone box in front of him. The box was roughly the size of a pony’s skull and had hundreds of lines embedded into it. At the top of the box was what looked like an upside down horseshoe with a W in its center. “Interesting, I’ve seen that symbol on a lot of the tablets we’ve found. Any idea as to what it is?”

“I have no idea,” the pegasus said placing the box on the table. “But something feels off about it.” Twilight’s horn lit up and the box was brought over to her.

“This box is giving off magical energy,” she said. “And it isn’t weak either. It’s strong, almost as if it’s alive.”

“How can a stone box be alive?”

Twilight smiled. “Ah, now there’s the question that we have to answer. As archaeologists, our job is to find out what these relics are and what purpose they serve. If this box is giving off magical energy, we have to discover why. The key must be in the writings. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.” The pegasus bowed and left the tent. The box was carefully inspected by Twilight. As she turned the box in her magical grip, the stone shifted. A piece of the box had been moved from its original place. The smile on Twilight’s face grew. A puzzle? Interesting. What happens when I solve you? Each side of the box shifted as Twilight tried to solve the puzzle. Pieces of the box moved from where they once stood. Despite the fact that this was supposed to be archaeological research, she was enjoying herself as she played with the puzzle.

After an hour of fiddling with the box, it gave off a click. The symbol gave off a bright yellow glow as it was placed back on the table. The top of the box opened slightly. Now, what secrets do you hold? Twilight carefully pushed the box’s lid upwards. From what she could see, the box held nothing but darkness. The box shook causing her to bring her hoof back. The lid was open two inches when two bright yellow eyes opened up from inside it. Twilight brought her eyes to its.

“Hello there,” she said. “Who might you be?” The eyes blinked. A sinister smile with sharp teeth appeared underneath the eyes. Before Twilight could react, the eyes and teeth flew towards her. A stream of black energy flowed from the box as it moved towards her. Twilight lowered herself into a defensive stance and lit up her horn. The energy gave off something that could resemble a chuckle. It flew towards her. A purple shield was brought up but the energy phased through it. It flew into Twilight’s chest causing her to scream in pain. Tears freely flowed from her eyes as the energy moved. The last of the energy entered her body and she fell to the floor. The green pegasus stuck his head in the tent.

“Professor!” he shouted. He ran to Twilight’s side and lifted her up. “What happened?” Twilight shook her head and wiped her eyes.

“Nothing,” she said. “Just a little fatigue. I managed to open the box.”

“Really? What was in it?”

“Just some magical energy,” The box’s lid was closed. “When I opened it, a bright light came from it, temporarily blinding me. Besides that, nothing was in it.”

“Do you want me to show the others?”

“Please,” the pegasus took the box and left Twilight alone. When the pegasus exited the tent, a wide smile appeared on her face. All of her teeth were showing and like the energy’s, they were razor sharp. Her eyes gave off a bright yellow glow before she turned to the text books. “Let’s see, it’s been… oh wow. Ten thousand years. And it seems that the world is in a peaceful state. How sickening. I might as well change that. I hope my brethren will help with that.”

Obselescence ses: Cliffhanger suspense! The secrets of the magical box and its conscious contents are left undiscovered here, but it’s intriguing enough an idea that I’d like to see this story resolved sometime in the future.

In the meantime, I suppose we should all watch out for Twilight. :O
