The pumpkin was an apple.
Pumpkins were not, in Pinkie’s experience, apples. And yet, this pumpkin was an apple. This was a definitively disconcerting discovery.
There were even more disconcerting things about this pumpkin, though.
“Can Ah help you, Pinkie?”
“Oh!” Pinkie looked up at her dear friend Applejack. Applejack, who was always honest and never lied. There were no hidden depths to her, right? “I was just admiring your pumpkin!”
“Aw, shucks Pinkie.” Applejack smiled genuinely. “Ah put a lotta hard work into that. You know how it is.”
Pinkie nodded sagaciously. The baker knew exactly how it was trying to carve foods with your hooves and teeth. Especially when, around the circumference of the apple, this particular pumpkin was carved with ancient spidery runes. She imagined those would be really hard to carve. In fact, with as complex and delicate as some of those symbols were, she wasn’t sure it would be possible without magic.
“It really paid off, though!” she said with a grin. “I wonder what those letters say?”
Pinkie Pie was perhaps Ponyville’s leading expert on smiles, and as she watched, Applejack’s smile didn’t change. It very deliberately did not change. “Nothin’ really, Pinkie. Ah just made ‘em up. Fer the look of the thing.”
Pinkie slouched. “Awww. So it’s not a witch symbol, inviting inside all those who recognise the ancient script?”
Applejack blinked. Her smile faltered and she took a step back. “How did you…?”
Pinkie smirked. “That’s a secret! Wanna tell me your secret first?”

RWL’s Commentary
Heh, well this is a strange little story. It’s great fun though. I love the idea of AJ carving apples instead of pumpkins and I love Pinkie’s description of it, and that she’s carving some secret magical message in it is great and intriguing. I wish I could see the rest of this story! Great stuff!
