Twilight brushed her legs against the floor, and the scuffing sound echoed in the quiet library as Applejack stood beside her, staring at the brown earth pony mare with a rough mane standing with her nose in a book, turning the pages with surprising speed. Applejack’s face was all twisted up in more competing emotions than Twilight could count, just like it had been ever since she brought her former pet to Twilight’s library the previous afternoon.

“Discord said he didn’t do it,” Twilight said. “And there’s no trace of poison joke in her coat. I’m sorry, but I’m just as confused as you are.”

Applejack’s face suggested that she was skeptical such a thing was possible.

“Yeah, that’s fine,” Applejack said. “But why’s she readin’? Hell, how’s she readin’?”

Winona glanced up from her books at smiled at Twilight for a moment before getting back to reading.

“Oh, that.” Twilight blushed and chuckled. “I was reading last night, trying to figure out what happened, and she watched me. She asked if I could teach her.”

Twilight glanced at the stack of books on Winona’s flank.

“She turned out to be a quick study.”

Applejack took off her hat and pressed a hoof to her forehead, and she clenched her eyes shut like she was trying to keep something out. “Alright. Fine. That’s alright. You figure out how to turn her back?”

“Nopony’s getting turned back,” Winona said.

“Alright, don’t you worry. Twi’s gonna be right over and we’ll get this all figured out.”

“Right. Thanks, AJ.”

“Heh. Kinda nice to talk to you, though.”

“I reckon it is, yeah.”

“Anything… I can do for you?”

“…Yeah. While I’m all ponified, you think I could taste an apple?”

“Sure thing! Here, you enjoy.”

“…Damn.”

“Winona? Are… are you cry—”

“No. I ain’t. Just got juice in my eye, is all.”

The prompt: One (or more) of the mane six’s pets is now a pony.

This is a thirty-minute writing prompt; you have thirty minutes (not including time spent thinking and planning) in which to write a story inspired by today’s prompt. You have six hours from the start of this prompt to submit your stories; submissions will be closed at 9:00pm Pacific, 12:00am Eastern, and 4:00am GMT. If you don’t happen to have a Tumblr account, you can submit your story by emailing it (in the body of the email, not as an attachment) to thirtyminuteponies@gmail.com; do not submit using Tumblr’s email submission system, as it tends to deliver us only the titles of the stories submitted using it.

Apple Bloom tapped her hooves on the wooden floor of the clubhouse, and it was quiet enough she could hear the wind rustling the trees outside and every sniff of Sweetie Belle’s nose. Scootaloo wobbled as she tried to walk backwards on her hind legs and kept falling over after every two steps. Sweetie Belle just watched her.

“Ain’t there a pie eatin’ contest this week?” Apple Bloom asked.

Scootaloo landed on her back and groaned. “We tried that already.”

“Urg,” Sweetie Belle said, clutching her hooves against her stomach. “Don’t remind me. I was so sick after that.”

“Hey! How about roller derby!” Scootaloo said, lifting her head from the floor.

Apple Bloom shook her head. “Nah. We tried that too.” She stretched out her right hind leg. “Besides, my leg still hurts sometimes after that fall.”

“Maybe we could…” Sweetie Belle blushed and pressed her nose into her folded hooves. “…ask a grown-up for advice?”

Scootaloo’s eyes widened and Apple Bloom smacked her hoof on the floor as she glared at Sweetie Belle. “We ain’t that desperate!”

“Wait, girls, shut up!” Scootaloo said, rolling over and leaping up to her feet. “I’ve got it! I figured out what we’re good at!”

Six mares. Fifteen combinations. Infinite possibilities.

Rainbow strutted around in the black flight suit that clung to her lithe body, and Rarity’s eyes followed every twist and turn of the smooth, nearly glistening fabric as Rainbow tested it with every stretch of her limbs.

“Damn, Rarity. This feels awesome.”

Rarity gave Rainbow a kiss and slid a hoof against Rainbow’s chest, feeling her handiwork, before grabbing the zipper.

Rainbow grinned. “What’re you doing?”

Rarity snorted. “Taking it off.”

Fallen apples litter the orchard, and Applejack stands at Fluttershy’s side instead of walking down the rows of trees picking up every last one, and they watch as an army of rabbits, squirrels, and birds clean the apples hungrily.

“I told you they could do it,” Fluttershy said, smiling as she leaned against Applejack.

Applejack grinned at her. “Wonder what we could do to pass the time instead.”

Fluttershy squirmed and spread her wings as Applejack’s lips met hers.

Pinkie Pie stares into the room in silence, looking at all of her friends, the party hats, the cake, the confetti, the presents.

“You… you surprised me,” she finally said.

Twilight just smiled even wider as she walked up and gave Pinkie a kiss.

“I told you I was studying Pinkie sense for a reason.”

Dear Princess Celestia,

I blink the tears from my eyes. I feel a little calmer already.

I realized yesterday that I never wrote you a letter after defeating Discord. Maybe in all the excitement of defeating him and the award ceremony I just forgot. Maybe I’ve been avoiding it. I had to take a hard look at myself after what happened and I’ve realized a few things.

As much as I’ve enjoyed being in Ponyville, and as much as I’m grateful that you let me stay here, I realize now that I’ve gotten lazy. I believed once that friends didn’t matter, and that they just took time away from study and work. And I think I might have swung a little too far in the other direction. My checklist for yesterday only had three things on it, and I didn’t even bother checking them off.

The fate of Equestria really did rely on my making friends. And now it relies on me keeping them.

I see them walking away from me again, and I have to hold my eyes shut for a moment before I continue.

I thought it would be easy. I won’t make that mistake again. I have to be prepared for everything now.

Your Faithful Student,
Twilight Sparkle

Fluttershy flinched as she shut her cottage door harder than she’d meant to, and the pouring rain outside almost sounded as though it was shushing her. She flicked her wings and kicked each of her legs as though it’d help dry her off, and she shook her head to try and get her mane off her face.

“Hey honeybunny.”

She blinked, and she saw Pinkie Pie sprawled out on the carpet by the fireplace, sitting next to a tray holding two cups and a teapot. Pinkie just smiled at her for a moment, before she slowly reached out and grabbed the teapot, lifting it and pouring both cups. Fluttershy stared at the rising steam from those cups, and she felt warmed already just looking at it.

“Hey Pinkie.”

“Twi, you wanna tell us why you’re not casting a light spell? Cause it’s seriously starting to bug—”

Rainbow’s voice was silenced when Twilight’s hoof touched the floor, and a line of light ran across the walls, lighting the dark room. Twilight smirked at her for a moment, but she said nothing as she walked out of the hall into the chamber before them. It was a wide circular room with a high domed ceiling, and the walls were covered in carvings depicting ponies, as well as zebras, griffons, donkeys, and buffalo. There was a large circle carved on the floor, with an intricate pattern of lines and swirls filling it.

My hoofsteps are silent as I enter the library. I stop for a moment, and my eyes drift upwards at the towering bookshelves that line the walls. It’s rare for me to see something new, in my line of work, and even rarer to be awed by it. The books are beyond counting, and they cover the walls so completely that I allow myself to imagine that they are the walls, like a fortress of paper and ink.

I am in no hurry. I walk slowly deeper into the musty halls, and through a stone archway, a rare sign of the structure underneath. In many places the books even cover the floors, and some lie open, as though their owner stopped in the middle, intending to finish later. I feel somewhat sad that she shall not have that opportunity.

My sense guides me through the titantic library, and I come finally to a small room with a desk, a window, and a living alicorn with her horn alight, flipping briskly through the pages of a book.

“I expected you sooner,” she says.

I stop. I brush my hooves against the dusty stone floor, and as ever it makes no sound. I flap my wings, and they are silent.

“Yes, I can hear you,” she says. She turns around to face me, and she smiles. It’s not a sight I’m accustomed to. “My name is Twilight Sparkle. Welcome to my libary, Saturn.”

I try to ignore the fact that she knows my name. I don’t worry about how she can hear and see me. There’s one thing I have to clarify first.

“You’re alive.”

Black as midnight at two in the afternoon. For a moment Rarity wondered whether she would ever get used to that, and she almost laughed at the thought that she would even have a chance to get used to anything.

She sat by a window on the western wall of her home, and she looked up at that dark sky. It was five in the evening when it happened, and that cloud of light hung at the same place in the sky where the sun had been in its last moments. The countless fragments looked so much like stars that ponies had taken to calling them stardust. In a way it was a brighter night sky than she’d ever seen. Over the four or five days, which grew ever harder to keep track of, the cloud expanded and dispersed, growing larger and sparser.

And dimmer. Every day there was a little less light.

The only warmth Rarity felt was at her back. She turned, and she saw Sweetie Belle, Apple Bloom, and Applejack huddled together in front of the fire that permanently burned in her fireplace. Applejack had arrived to bring their ration of wood for the day, having spent the day at the forest gathering it, and Rarity had invited her in to rest for a moment. Rarity made a mental check, and her next shift at the forest was in thirty seven hours. Everypony needed wood, and everypony had to do their part collecting it.

“Darling, did you hear?”

“Hear what?”

“Oh, it was awful! Hooves everywhere, bodies grinding against one another, and lips pressed together, barely holding back moans!”

“Ooh! I like all those things!”

“Well… yes. But still! In public!”

“Even better!”

“Pinkie! You’re missing the point! It’s gossip!”

“Oh, right! I can’t believe it! It’s scandalicious!”

“I know, darling, I know!”

The prompt: Everypony was surprised to see them kiss.

Special rule: The reason everypony is surprised should be something more than not knowing the kissing ponies are a couple. That’s fine as an aspect of it, but there should be something additionally surprising about the kiss, the couple, or the circumstances of it.
